Viewing distance for LED scoreboards

Postby CCuer » Tue Jul 17, 2018 4:08 am

I am working on a proposal to management to add a scoreboard at the end of our track. I think the crowd will grow if they have more to see. How far can I read the times and speeds on your LED scoreboards?

LED scoreboards vary in design, brightness, viewing angle, and readable distance. RaceAmerica manufactures LED displays in four digit heights, 5in/13cm, 8in/20cm, 15in/38cm and 24in/61cm. The design and brightness of these displays allows for approximately 40ft/12mtr of viewing distance per in of digit height. This equates to:

5in/13cm viewable up to 200ft/60mtr
8in/20cm viewable up to 320ft/97mtr
15in/38cm viewable up to 600ft/183mtr
24in/61cm viewable up to 1000ft/305mtr.

Viewing angle is largest with the smaller sizes and narrows with larger sizes to match their applications. Smaller displays are viewed closer up compared to larger displays positioned along a race track aimed at a specific area for viewing from a distance.
