Soap Box Derby Timer
Timer SBD
Differential Finish between Lanes
and Optional ET's for both Lanes

Timer SBD Pix Race Cartoon
Startup Pix RaceAmerica improved the Timer SBD Timing System with the Soap Box Derby racing event in mind. The Timer SBD is two timers in one measuring the Differential Time between each lane crossing the finish line AND measuring the Elapsed Time for each lane! The Elapsed Time measurement is displayed on dual LED Displays located on the console and the ET's can be enabled or disabled with a few keystroke on the integrated 12-button keypad.
ET Option Pix To use the optional lane ET's, the starting line can be wired to the timer using one common starting beam, or the timer can be wired to a microswitch mounted on the starting gate. When thebgate drops, the timer start timing for both lanes until each lane crosses the finish line. The timer can also be wired to one of our handheld Starter's Buttons for manual starting.
Car Number Pix To keep track of the drivers, their Bib or ID numbers can be entered into the Timer SBD. When the race is over, this information can be printed or sent to a PC running data capture software.
Winner Pix The dual LED Displays on the timer begin live counting the Elapse Time when the start is triggered. When one vehicle crosses the finish line, the display switches to displaying the winning lane and the differential timer begins live counting until the second vehicle crosses the finiah line. ET's, Winning Lane, and Differential Finish Time can be recall to the LED Display on the timer or sent to a Timeslip printer or Large Display for crowd viewing. Optyional Win Ligts can also be connected to the cable to display who won to the crowd.
Alignment Pix Pressing the ALIGN pushbutton places the Timer SBD into a mode of continuously monitoring the alignment of each Infrared Track Sensor and IR Beam Emitter pair on the track at the finish line. This is especially convenient when setting up the timer on your track and makes adjustments quick and simple. Each IR Track Sensor/IR Beam Emitter pair is monitored and displayed as a single digit in the display. When the alignment is not correct, the digit counts at a rate equal to the alignment problem. If the count is slow, the alignment is close and needs a little adjusting. If the counting is at a fast rate, the alignment is way off and needs immediate attention. Once the alignment is correct, the digit stops counting and you are ready to time a run.
Reset Pix Pressing the RESET pushbutton places the Timer SBD into the run mode. The timer automatically re-checks the IR Track Sensor and IR Beam Emitter alignments before each run and indicates it is ready to time a run.

RaceAmerica Infrared Sensors overcome the problems with sun light and alignment common with many photocell or low tech infrared solutions. Other manufacturers use photocells which are very sensitive to sunlight and work poorly in bright sunlight. Other manufacturers also use more expensive laser powered beam emitters which generate a bright light to their low tech IR sensors. These seem to work if the sensors are shaded well from sunlight but often are internmittent when running a race event. While others purchase their sensors from outside sources, RaceAmerica's Infrared Sensors were designed by RaceAmerica back in 1991 and we have been perfecting them ever since. Our sensors are designed to operate from total darkness to the brightest sunlight accomplished through a coded digital signal.

The proven drag racing technology of RaceAmerica's Infrared Track Sensors and Beam Emitters provide line-of-sight detection of moving objects and the Infrared design is immune to radio interference and bright sunlight. The Track Sensors connect to the Timer SBD console using an RJ-11 connector for fast and easy setup. The Beam Emitters are powered by a choice of four AA-size batteries and provide detection of objects up to 50 feet away.
