What do I need to turn a 6860 into a clock?

Postby DougD » Sun Mar 28, 2021 1:10 pm

I have a 6860 LED Display that I purchased at a pawn shop. the display is in a ascending counting mode. what would I need to purchase to get the display into a clock only mode for my 40' x 30' garage/man cave?

Can you confirm the model number is 6860 and not 6832SC? Both models use the same hardware of 6-digits 8in/20cm tall.

The 6860 does not have a standalone countdown mode unless controlled by our PC utility software. Same for a time-of-day clock. The 6832SC does have both modes of operation. The manual for both model can be found on our website under SUPPORT then OWNERS MANUAL. Select the manuals for current products then scroll down the list until you see 6860 or 6832SC.

Depending on the age of the unit (look for a model number and serial number on the back), if it is a 6860 it could be updated to a 6832SC.

Appears the code inside does not match the model number on the outside. Our records indicate the revision of code running inside was P.2 when it left the factory 9 years ago!

When power is first applied, the display walks through all the segments then displays the revision of the code running inside as C.6 or H.4 or A.1 or something similar.

Can you check what the code is?

If the display does contain 6832SC code, the red DIP switch on the back of the display is used to change mode of operation as documented in the Owner's Manual at:

The display is a 6860 model. On startup, there are built in diagnostic patterns, one of which is a count up timer. DIP switch 1 controls whether the display enters diagnostic mode or not. Once in diagnostic mode, the other DIP switches determine the diagnostic pattern to loop on.

Flip DIP switch 1 to the ON position and cycle power to exit diagnostic count up clock mode.

The 6860 does not contain a time-of-day standalone mode since the display does not know what time zone or time of day is current. The 6860 was designed to interface as a display of race results for several RaceAmerica timers or PC software. Download our free Display Utility software from our website (www.raceamerica.com) under SUPPORT then under DOWNLOADS click on UTILITY SOFTWARE and scroll down to Display Utility. There is a time-of-day function in the Display Utility program that will send the current time of day to the display, then disconnect the PC. If the display looses power, you will need to reconnect the Display Utility to set the time of day in the display. We actually utilize a time of day display in our manufacturing area setup this same way.

To connect the display to the PC, there are a number of cables on our Online Store (store.raceamerica.com) depending on if the PC has a 9-pin connector or USB port. In our Online Store, click on DATA COMMUNICATIONS, then RS232 SERIAL. 45232A is a USB to display cable or 6033A is a 9-pin to display cable. If the PC does not have a 9-pin port, your will need to purchase a USB-to-Serial adapter from a local computer store to use the 6033A cable.

If you wish to build the 6033A cable, go to our website to SUPPORT then under TECHNICAL SUPPORT click on APPLICATION NOTES. Select application notes AN-CBL002 and AN-CBL004.

Good luck whichever way you go. I think the end result will be what you are looking for.
