Hardwired DTSS tree - all lights on!

I am helping a buddy with his 2650 timing system wit a DTSS tree hardwired to the timer. He had some electrical problems at the track and now the tree just lights up all the lights at power on. Every so often a few of the lights remain off. The 2650 shows it is running through the tests at start up but the tree does not respond. If I leave the cable disconnected from the 2650, the tree does the same thing.

Do I have a tree problem since the timer seems to be working?

There are three parts to the power, communications and control of the hardwired DTSS LED Tree. Power flows from the tree to the timer to power the timer. Communications is sent from the timer to the tree to tell the tree which light to turn on.

If the timer powers up and looks like all is working then power and ground are reaching the timer from the tree. Next, if the tree does not respond to the timer's commands and communications, then the problem is one of three possibilities: the timer sending commands, the tree receiving commands or the interconnect cable between them. The timer may have a failure in the transmitting circuitry, the tree may have a failure in the receiving circuitry or there is a break in the cable or loose connection in one of the connectors or loose contact.

A customer could ohm out the cable for continuity, but more difficult to find a high frequency short between signals. As far as the timer or tree, these will need to be shipped to RaceAmerica for testing and repair. When sending them in, send both the tree electronics (removed from the tree with three screws) and the timer, no need to ship the cable. If the cable is bad, replacement is the only option since a pull internal to the cable will be intermittent and hard to find and repair.

Can iI get the pinouts to test the continuity of the cable from timer to tree?

The 16-pin connector on the 2650 timer will connect to the 4-pin connector on the tree. The following pins are connected together:

16-cond pin 1 to 4-cond pin 1
16-cond pin 2 to 4-cond pin 3
16-cond pin 15 to 4-cond pin 2
16-cond pin 16 to 4-cond pin 4

Remember a continuity check is a DC resistance check and may not show an issue at higher speed communications between the timer and tree but its a good start for basic track cable failure.
