DTSS Tree half works other half is slow or stops

Postby Oldmate » Sun Oct 14, 2018 2:12 am

Was involved with using a fairly new system that runs the DTSS tree, went over all connections multiple times. Tree would operate fine then would miss the third Amber then go green other times straight to green. Would have a stage light stuck on. Would power cycle the tree would go through it’s startup process sometimes would work other times lane1 would run through its test sequence and lane2 would either not run through and get stuck other times would run through but at a slower rate. Extremely strange scenario continued to just run off lane1 only and it never had an issue but lane2 would constantly freeze or have slow delayed lights.

Is this DTSS tree hardwired to the timer or one of the wireless DTSS models? If hardwired, which timer? This makes a difference in the electronic controller in the tree. The hardwired tree uses the timers cpu to control the tree while the wireless tree has a second processor on its control board.

Also, when it would miss the amber, was there a delay before the green like the missed amber had time to illuminate or did it jump straight from amber to green?

The tree is a hardwired model, it would delay like it should illuminate then go to green. Sometimes it was like it would compensate by holding the second amber longer then go to green. Then other times it would never make it to green getting stuck on an Amber.

Three parts of the system are active when the tree changes lights: The control electronics in the tree, the timer's tree interface circuitry, and the cable connecting between them. Since there are timing signals and data signals sent between the timer and tree, any momentary interruption in signal or momentary distortion of these signals would cause what you have seen. Since all three could cause the symptom, it is difficult to narrow it down further.

You might want to contact RaceAmerica Technical Support to get these items checked out.

One of the local tracks extended the cable between their 2900 to the tree. The cable was 40ft or 50ft and they made their own cable at 175ft so they could relocate the timer to inside the tower. First testing all worked fine. Once they installed it in conduit, the tree would studer or random flash lights. Startup sequence was usually more random than incremental. They changed it back and never had another tree issue.

There is one more possibility. The DTSS has circuit boards with LEDs in place of actual bulbs. The light instructions from the tree controller are received and displayed on the left side or right side of the tree.

You might want to confirm the issue appears on both front and rear of lane2. These are separate sets of electronics both connected to the tree controller.

After doing some testing we have found that the issue is isolated to the front of lane 2 and the rear tree works fine.

There are four interconnect cables from the tree control board (located where the power connects to the tree) connecting to each of the light sets (front left, front right, rear left and rear right). A cable might have a loose connection at one end or the other. The tree control panel can be removed (3 screws - front bottom, back bottom, side bottom) and lowered out of the tree.

The metal panel slides out the bottom of the tree exposing the tree control board and the four connectors. Determine which cable is connected to the failing lights by unplugging one connector at a time and powering on the tree. When the failing panel does not light up, that's the cable. You may be able to reach up into the tree to get access to the other end without having to disassemble the tree.

Check for an oval label on the metal plate, (underside of the tree - the side where the power cord connects).

Check if there is a red or green oval label with the REV level printed on it. This would signify the hardware/software level running in the tree.
